People with children should file 2020 taxes soon to get the Advance Child Tax Credit payments and any other tax benefits they're due.

Anyone eligible for the Child Tax Credit, must file their taxes to receive these benefits. With the deadline to file federal taxes extended to May 17th, it is important to claim the credits that apply to them. If they are unsure how to file their 2020 tax returns, they can find free federal tax assistance here in the Bay Area, or call 211.

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. The VITA program has operated for over 50 years, offering free tax help to:

  • People who generally make $57,000 or less
  • Persons with disabilities; and
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers
