Estimated percentage of children ages 0-12 with parents in the labor force for whom licensed child care spaces are. The percentages are found by comparing the total number of licensed child care spaces by an estimate of the number of children 0-12 with parents in the labor force. Children ages 0-12 with parents in the labor force include those in single-parent families with one working parent and those in two-parent families with two working parents. Due to an update in methodology, these figures may differ from those in the California Child Care Portfolio. These numbers are just an estimate, as not all children in working families require licensed child care. Counties with inadequate sample size have missing data; regional counts can be found at www.kidsdata.org.

About the Child Care Data Tool

The Child Care Data Tool offers a comprehensive look at child care supply and demand across every county in California—as well as statewide trends—dating back to 1996. All in one place, you can explore changes over time and easily access data for your county or the entire state. The tool is designed to be user-friendly, helping you find the data you need quickly and accurately.

Where do the data come from?

The child care data are gathered with the assistance of local child care resource and referral (R&R) agencies and combined with child care cost data and child and family demographics. It has been relied on by policymakers, business leaders, health care professionals, educators, planning agencies and child advocates to understand the child care needs of California families.

What can you use the data for?

The data can help you evaluate child care needs, opportunities, and strengths in your county. It can also be a tool to inform others on the child care landscape in your community. What stories will you tell with the data?

How do you use the tool?

  1. Pick the year you would like data on.
  2. Select the geography. California statewide and county data are available. Several options may be chosen.
  3. Select from the data categories. The main options are: licensed child care supply, child care request data, cost of care, people, income & poverty, and labor force. There are also sub- categories you may explore.
  4. View data results on our website, or download the data to view as an Excel spreadsheet.
